Screening study (polygraphy):

You should consult a physician specializing in sleep disorders who will evaluate the probability that you suffer from OSA. If it turns out that your risk of developing OSA is high, your doctor may decide to carry out additional diagnostic tests.

The diagnostics consist of an interview, which is performed by the physician, and sleep test during the night. The sleep test allows for measurement of breathing patterns, snoring, evaluation of blood oxygen level, muscle activity, and body position during sleep.

Diagnosis is now facilitated by the use of highly advanced technology. We have acquired the most modern portable device: the Alice Philips Respironix, which is designed to diagnose sleep disorders at home, without involvement of medical staff and a hospital stay.

Polysomnography:

As one of the few clinics in Poland specializing in diagnosis and treatment of OSA, we offer a full polysomnography service performed in the comfort of a patient's own home. This allows us to assess the structure of sleep.

The added benefit of Polysomnography, as compared with the most frequently performed screening sleep study (polygraphy), is that it allows for assessment of the bioelectrical activity in the brain. Observation of brain waves allows for analysis of the sleep structure as well as frequency and period of arousals from sleep.

Polysomnography is most often used in cases in which there are suspected sleep disorders other than sleep apnea, (eg. parasomnias). It is also recommended when there is a strong clinical suspicion of breathing disorders during sleep, and the result of routinely performed polygraphy is negative.

How to treat OSA?

Regardless of treatment, it is essential for all patients suffering from sleep disorders to modify their lifestyle according to these points:

  • body weight reduction
  • avoidance of alcohol in the evening
  • avoidance of hypnotics/sleeping pills/sedatives/tranquilizers
  • sleeping on your abdomen or side
  • avoiding sleeping on your back (sleeping in an upright position)
  • taking care of proper sleep hygiene

Treatment of OSA partly depends on the severity of the patients’ sleep disorder. For those with mild apnea, conservative measures mentioned above may help manage or even prevent OSA. In patients with moderate to severe OSA, compliance with these requirements is a necessary part of treatment, but not sufficient.

In cases of sleep apnea that prove difficult to treat, it may also be necessary to start therapy to assist breathing. You may benefit from CPAP treatment (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). With this treatment, the CPAP device uses positive air pressure to maintain upper airway patency during sleep and prevents snoring. The air is freely delivered to the lungs, there is no hypoxia, the quality of your sleep is greatly improved, and the OSA symptoms subside.

CPAP therapy is safe for the patient, painless, and the most common and effective treatment of OSA. It significantly reduces the risk of serious complications of the disease, and it has become the standard of care for this condition.

We are in possession of the most modern devices used in the sleep apnea treatment.
